JOHNS ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - A cancer diagnosis can turn a person's life upside down, but research shows that gardens can improve their emotional and physical well being. For two years, Simply Divine Garden has been creating gardens free of charge for cancer patients in the tri-county area, like Maxine Stullenberger."I love life and when I was diagnosed I became a blubbering idiot, I was like, 'Me? Have cancer?,'" said Stullenberger.Stullenberger was diagnosed with stage-4 cancer in October; devastating news for her family. "He kept saying mother you have to fight this, go deep inside," said Stullenberger. This freelance photographer and avid gardener decided self pity would not play a part in her in life. "It took me a couple months to get it back, but when I got it back it was like forget it nothing could stop it," said Stullenberger. But while she was fighting for her life, her garden was falling apart. Then Darcy Whalen came in to bring her garden back. "It was like I won a prize, you know," said Stullenberger.Whalen started Simply Divine Garden at the end of 2008; creating free gardens for cancer patients "so they can face their illness and give them hope and inspiration.""It's nurture-nature," said Whalen.Since March of 2009, the group has created about 30 gardens around the tri-county area. Each garden takes about four hours to create and can cost anywhere from $500 to $2,000.The money comes from grants, donations and fundraisers. Stullenberger says this garden means a lot. "You feed it, it'll feed you, plain and simple," said Stullenberger."Just to tend to something, give it life, to know you've done something, someone helped you do it, and it gives you motivation," said Stullenberger. It also gives her a place to slow down and appreciate life. "I don't even go by day-by-day any more; it's second-by-second," said Stullenberger. "It's my sanctuary I come out here I have my birds its just my peaceful place."This Sunday, Simply Divine Garden is hosting a fundraiser at Taco Boy Downtown. The "Planter Party" starts at noon and runs until 3 p.m. with live music, food, drinks, a silent auction and a live auction of celebrity painted pots.©2010 WCSC. All rights reserved
